Tenchi Masaki is an ordinary teenager living with his father in the city. The only exciting thing about him is that every summer, he travels to Okayama to help his shinto-grandfather with his shrine. That is, until one day, he disobeys his grandfather's words and decides to explore the mystical cave he was forbidden to trod on.

Tenchi, unkowingly , releases the demon Ryoko, who has been imprisoned in there for 700 years. As soon as he did, all his troubles began. After school, Tenchi falls asleep. When he awakes, he find Ryoko, who after being trapped for 700 years, realeases her anger on Tenchi and tries to kill him. But, the sword Tenchi had taken from the cave (Tenchi-ken) saves him, and he defeates Ryoko.

Soon after, a Princess named Ayeka looking for her brother Yosho (the man who entombed Ryoko) lands on the Earth after feeling Ryoko's power. She falls in love with Tenchi and constantly bickers with Ryoko, who is also in love with Tenchi, over who will get him. Ayeka's sister, Sasami, joins the gang as the head cook of the house.

Later, we are joined by the clueless Mihoshi and the Genius Washu. Mihoshi falls from the sky, and Washu is realesed from her prison after Kagato is defeated. Can anything else happen to Tenchi?
